DIY - A big bag for the market.

Photo : DIY - A big bag for the market.

Thanks to this new tutorial, you will discover how to make a very nice bag that will be perfect to accompany you this summer to the beach or the market.

Note
Duration : 2h (including 40min drying time)
Difficulty : 3/5
Material : DIY - A big bag for the market.

Material

  • 50 cm jacquard fabric in 150 cm wide
  • 50 cm fabric mat taupe color
  • 2 m cotton strap (3-5 cm wide)
  • Odif Odicoat
  • Wide brush or Odiclette
  • Sewing pliers and pins (for straps)
  • Matching or contrasting sewing thread
  • Machine and hand needles for thick fabric
  • Sewing machine
  • Sewing scissors
  • Parchment paper
  • Iron

Step 1

Step 1
  • In each of the fabrics, cut 2 rectangles of 50 x 70 cm.
  • As shown on the joint pattern, cut a 10 cm square at the bottom of each rectangle on each corner.

Step 2

Step 2
  • Coat the area of each rectangle with a layer of Odicoat by applying it with the flat brush or Odiclette and then dry for about 20 minutes in the open air.
  • Apply 1 additional layer and let dry again. O
  • nce the Odicoat is dry, iron each of the rectangles at medium temperature, on the Odicoat side, protecting the sole of the iron with a sheet of parchment paper.
  • This operation makes it possible to fix the Odicoat which then becomes machine washable at 30°C.
  • The appearance obtained with 2 layers of Odicoat will be that of a coated fabric.
  • For a more waxed look, add an extra layer before ironing the fabric.

Note
Because thick fabrics are more difficult to handle, traces of Odicoat may appear on the reverse side. This is no problem as the back will be hidden. Just make sure to apply the Odicoat in a regular layer on the spot.

Step 3

Step 3
  • Assemble the rectangles in jacquard fabric, piece against piece, starting with the bottom about 1 cm from the edge.
  • Continue by the seams of the sides.
  • It is useless to surfiler the edges, the Odicoat prevents the fabric from fraying.

Step 4

Step 4
  • On each bottom corner of the bag, align and overlay the bottom seam and side seam by reversing the seam margins to avoid oversize and pin.
  • Sew 1 cm from edge.

Step 5

Step 5
  • Repeat steps 3 and 4 with the mat (the spot will be the side coated with the Odicoat) leaving an opening of at least 30 cm on the bottom.

Step 6

Step 6
  • Slide the turned jacquard fabric assembly to the RS, to the braided fabric assembly (the 2 parts must be RS) and pin.

Step 7

Step 7
  • Sew around the top of the bag 1 cm from the edge.

Step 8

Step 8
  • Return the bag to the place by the opening left in the bottom of the braided fabric assembly.

Step 9

Step 9
  • Close the bottom opening by hand with hidden points.

Step 10

Step 10
  • Put the bag in shape and pin along the top seam of the bag.

Step 11

Step 11
  • Stitch the edge of the bag approximately 1 cm (0.5-1 cm) from the edge of the bag.

Step 12

Step 12
  • Cut 4 pieces of strap 50 cm long (to get shorter handles, reduce the length of the straps) and assemble them 2 by 2 as shown in the photo leaving the ends free for about 8 cm (mark the boundary with a pin or line (heat-erasable pen type Frixion).

Step 13

Step 13
  • Position the straps mounted on the edge of the bag.
  • Center them well and make sure they are face-to-face on both sides of the bag.
  • Form a retract at each end and pin into place.
  • Sew each end of the straps by doubling the seams and forming a reinforcement cross as shown in the picture.
  • Be sure to sew all thicknesses at the same time.
  • It is advisable to sew slowly to avoid breaking the machine needle (6 thicknesses at the end of the straps).

Tip: Work on a glass plate (or glass table) that will be very easy to clean between 2 applications of Odicoat and will not fix the lint.

Conclusion

Conclusion

The bag is finally ready!
It’s gone for a stroll to the sweet sound of cicadas or for a refreshing swim!
